Who we are

Microbe Safari (“we / us / our”) control and operate this website (“Site”). The Site was created as an outreach project, funded by SEFARI Gateway and included partners from Moredun Research Institute, the Rowett Institute, Scotland’s Rural College and the James Hutton Institute. Microbe Safari is committed to protecting your personal data and adheres to the principles of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) when processing your personal data. This Privacy Notice outlines what personal data Microbe Safari collects from you through your interaction with this Site microbe-safari.org.uk. Please read through the Privacy Notice to understand how Microbe Safari uses and protects the information obtained from those visiting and using its Site.

The Moredun Group are the controller of any personal data Microbe Safari process about you for the purposes set out in this Privacy Notice.

We regularly review this Notice therefore we may change this Notice from time to time so please check this page occasionally to ensure that you’re happy with any changes. Through accessing our Site and/or submitting an enquiry through the Site you are consenting to the collection, retention and use of your personal information in accordance with the terms of this Privacy Notice. Under 18s

If you are under 18, you should review the terms in this Privacy Notice with your parent or guardian to make sure that you both understand them.

The “Contact Us” and “Feedback” forms on the Site should not be used by anybody under the age of 16. If there are circumstances where we process personal information of an individual under 16 then we will ensure that consent is given by a legal guardian.

What is personal data?

Personal data is anything which enables us to identify you in some way such as a name, email address, or an online identifier such as an IP address.

You may be asked to provide personal data through our Site or by submitting an e-mail to info@microbe-safari.org.uk.

Special category data means personal information revealing your racial or ethnic origin; political opinions; religious or philosophical beliefs; or trade union membership; the processing of genetic data; biometric data; data concerning health or data concerning your sex life or sexual orientation; and criminal convictions or involvement in criminal proceedings.

When we use the term ‘personal data’ we mean both personal data and special category of data.

What personal data is Microbe Safari processing?

Personal details (such as your name, e-mail address and organisation) which you provide by submitting an enquiry via the Site.

Every time you visit our Site, information may automatically be collected about you. Information we capture includes:

  • how you have reached our Site and the internet protocol (IP) address you have used
  • your browser type, versions and plug-ins, time zone settings and your operating system
  • the platform used by you to use our Site. This may also include details on your journey through the Site, including which links you click on (including date and time), how long you stayed on a page, methods used to browse away from a webpage and other page interaction information
  • which videos you have watched and for how long
  • what content you like or share.

Such information may then be used by us to help us better understand how visitors use our Site to enable us to create better content and more relevant communications. It may also be used for internal record keeping and audit purposes, to help keep our Site safe and secure and administer our Site. Activities may include troubleshooting, data analysis, testing, research and statistical purposes.

We may share such information collected about you with selected third parties who deal with the operation, optimisation and improvement of our Site. This may include:

  • a contractor / sub-contractor / business appointed by us to deal with the design, running, operation and maintenance of our Site; and
  • an analytics and search engine provider, such as Google, who provide support to improve and optimise our Site.

Where did Microbe Safari obtain my personal data from?

The personal data (name, e-mail) is gathered from the information you input on the Site’s enquiry pages either through the online enquiry forms or by submitting an e-mail to info@microbe-safari.org.uk.  IP addresses may be collected, where available, from data subjects when they access the Microbe Safari Site.

Why is Microbe Safari processing my personal data?

Microbe Safari is processing your personal data for the purposes of responding to enquiries. In relation to IP addresses, we use this to inform improvements to the Site and for internal system administration. By using the Microbe Safari Site and providing your personal data via the enquiry page or otherwise through the Site you are consenting to Microbe Safari processing your personal data for these purposes.

Will my personal data be shared with any other organisation/third parties and if so, why?

Microbe Safari will not share your personal data with any other organisation or third parties without seeking your prior consent. An exception to this would be where we are required to share your personal data in accordance with law or any regulatory requirement to which Microbe Safari is subject or where we are undergoing a corporate restructure.

Will my personal data be shared outside of the EEA?

Microbe Safari will not share your personal data outside of the EEA without first seeking your prior consent.

Is my personal data safe?

Microbe Safari works hard to protect your personal data and have adopted appropriate technical and organisational measures to keep it safe from unauthorised disclosure, alteration or destruction.

Unfortunately, the transmission of information via the internet is not completely secure. Although we will do our best to protect your personal data, we cannot guarantee the security of your personal data transmitted to Microbe Safari via the internet; any transmission is at your own risk.

How can I stop Microbe Safari using my personal data for marketing purposes if I no longer wish to receive communications from Microbe Safari?

Microbe Safari will not use personal data for marketing purposes. If you no longer wish to receive  communication from Microbe Safari and would like your personal  data removed from our database please e-mail our Administrator on info@microbe-safari.org.uk.

How long will Microbe Safari retain my personal data?

Microbe Safari will keep your personal data for no longer than is necessary for the purpose we obtained it for or until such time that you withdraw your consent and exercise your right to request that Microbe Safari stops processing your personal data.

Does Microbe Safari make any automated decisions about me or profile my personal data?

Microbe Safari does not make automated decisions about you and also does not profile your personal data.

What are my rights in relation to the personal data Microbe Safari holds about me?

At any point while we are in possession of or processing your personal data, you, the data subject, have the following rights in certain circumstances:

  • Right of access – you have the right to request a copy of the information that we hold about you.
  • Right of rectification – you have a right to correct data that we hold about you that is inaccurate or incomplete.
  • Right to be forgotten –you can ask for the data we hold about you to be erased from our records.
  • Right to restriction of processing – you have the right to request we restrict processing your personal data in certain circumstances.
  • Right of portability – you have the right to have the data we hold about you transferred to another organisation.
  • Right to object – you have the right to object to certain types of processing such as direct marketing.
  • Right to object to automated processing, including profiling – you also have the right to be subject to the legal effects of automated processing or profiling.
  • Right to judicial review: in the event that Microbe Safari refuses your request under rights of access, we will provide you with a reason as to why. You have the right to complain as outlined below.

Under the data protection legislation there are some exemptions to the above rights that are permitted. Please get in touch if you require further clarification.

We may not be able to provide you with a full service if you choose to exercise your rights to have personal data restricted or deleted and in circumstances where such personal information is simply not provided. Further details about your rights can be found on the Site of the Information Commissioners Office (https://ico.org.uk/).

In order to comply with your request to exercise your rights we will need you to provide identification. We will respond within the required timescales (unless a permitted exemption applies) once we have received your information request and your identification.

You have the right to ask for a copy of the information Microbe Safari process about you and if at any point you believe the information we process on you is incorrect you can request to see this information and have it corrected or deleted. Our Site uses cookies to distinguish you from other users of our Site.
